Bug-Out-Bag: Zombie Apocalypse
Unless you’re living under a rock, you’ve heard about the approaching zombie apocalypse. When it begins, hordes of flesh-eating undead will be unleashed on our world, leaving a wake of brains, guts, and blood in their path.
Surviving the apocalypse is not going to be easy. A recent study predicts that only 273 people (of the approximately 7.5 billion) will live through an undead uprising. If you want to be one of the lucky ones it’s important to be prepared.
Whether you hide from hordes in a bunker, or outrun walkers by staying on the move, you’ll need a well-stocked bug-out-bag to give you a fighting chance. We’ve put together a list of self-defense tools, basic first aid supplies, and essential safety gear to have with you at all times...
What’s in Your Zombie Bug Out Bag?
TACTICAL BACKPACK
The first step to building your zombie go-bag is choosing the right backpack. This one has tons of storage space to hold large gear, and enough pockets to keep everything organized. Adjustable waist and sternum straps help support heavy loads, while the front and side compartments give you quick and easy gear access. Most importantly, the black Typhon camo print provides great nighttime camouflage. The zombies will have trouble spotting you after the sun sets.
WALKING AXE
As a general rule of thumb, the best way to kill a zombie is by destroying its brain. This walking axe by United Cutlery was made to crack zombie skulls and neutralize potential attacks. The razor sharp blade is made of strong 2Cr13 stainless steel and is attached to a fiberglass reinforced nylon handle. It comes with a snap-on rubberized axe blade for easy transport.
NIGHT VISION BINOCULARS
Show nocturnal zombies who’s boss with these night vision binoculars. A built-in infrared illuminator improves target recognition in any environment, even complete darkness. Having these on hand will make it easier to safely move at night, and spot potential creepers in your area. While night vision is expensive, there will likely be little need for money after the zombies take over.
First aid Medical Kit
A well-stocked first aid kit is a must in any zombie survival scenario. This kit comes equipped with everything you need to treat trauma injuries, including a CPR face shield, 4" EMT shears, and an irrigation syringe. The lightweight kit is portable and will not weigh your pack down.
EASY-TO-CARRY BB GUN
In a full blown zombie war, food supplies may become scarce. If you’re desperate enough, a BB gun can be used to catch and kill small game, like squirrels and rodents. In addition, it might slow down your zombie enemies long enough for you to make a quick escape. The Tanfoglio 1911 is reliable, compact and uses CO2 efficently. Just make sure not to give away your position when firing off loud rounds.
BALLISTIC GOGGLES
Zombie fights are not pretty, and definitely not clean. If you do run across a member of the undead, expect brains and other unsavory fluids to be flying. These goggles are the best form of eye protection available. They will defend against sun, wind, dust, brains, and other flying projectiles. Clear and grey tinted lens are included.
CAMOUFLAGE WATERPROOF PONCHO
As a rule, zombies don't have great eyesight. This camouflage poncho will help you and your gear move unnoticed through the forest. We recommend covering it with decomposing material to mask your scent.
In addition, a poncho will keep you dry when you’re on the move, and provide shelter when you stop to rest. You can also use it to collect water and wrap wounds.
VERY LARGE KNIFE
While killing a zombie with a knife would require tremendous skill, it is always a good idea to have a dependable blade on hand in dangerous situations. Important factors to consider when choosing a knife for the apocalypse are blade sharpness, quick deployment and overall sturdiness. The Espada by Cold Steel is a tactical folder with an impressive 5.5 inch blade. It is capable of taking on everyday cutting tasks, and tough enough to put up a fight if you find yourself face to face with one of living dead.
COMPASS
You will need to navigate your way over unfamiliar terrain to reach safety. This lightweight compass is compact enough for easy pocket carry. The tough polypropylene material can withstand tough use, while the high-visibility yellow text is easy to read. In the event you run across a friendly face, the full-length sighting mirror can double as a signalling device.
